Diaspora Kava Experience

About Diaspora Cafe Seattle

Diaspora Cafe, the only Seattle kava bar, hosts the creators and patrons of Seattle’s most delicious ceremonial beverages, foods and shared experiences. Everyone is welcome to Diaspora’s indoor and outdoor spaces and events regardless of form or identity. We serve only the highest quality, kava, yaupon espresso and cacao from sustainable and ethical sources in North America and Hawai’i. In partnership with the teachings of the plants, our team also offers information around ongoing land and water rights movements, and ways to get involved.

Co-founder and manager Hector was raised in the chicano culture of Southern California with roots in Michoacan, Mexico and the deserts of Arizona, US. Hector immersed himself in farming, preparing and serving Kava at Kanaka in Hawai’i for the last two years. He has gained a passionate responsibility to advance food sovereignty and share the traditional medicines of ancient cultures, including Kava and the cacao drink of his own culture.

Ian was raised in Seattle and has experience in urban farming, live event production and growing sustainable businesses. He has founded multiple successful small businesses and spent several years running 200-300 person live music and arts events in San Francisco.

About the Workshop

The Diaspora Kava experience is an immersive journey that will teach you what kava is exactly, and the importance of kava preparation to Oceania culture.

You will have the opportunity to squeeze your own kava beverage with the highest quality kava root that is ethically sourced from Hawaii and Fiji. In the process of preparing the kava we will talk about the chemical compounds within kava, and its medicinal properties to the mind and body as a relaxation libation.

As we finish preparing the kava you will learn the story, and history of this sacred beverage and its gaining popularity. We will finish off our experience with drinking the kava that we prepared together and talking about indigenous agricultural movements from Polynesia to the Salish region.
